11 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO FIGHT THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT
- If you are an atheist, agnostic, humanist or you belong to a religious minority, find ways and places where you can be open about who you are. Christians, fundie and normal, assume that this is a Judeo-Christian country which it is not. They need to see visual evidence to the contrary.
- Write to your elected officials. Letters are counted more than any other form of communication and are much cheaper than long-distance telephone calls. It is important to write not only when a specific state/church issue comes up, but also when a politician spews "family values" rhetoric or attacks the concepts of separation of church and state or freedom from religion.
- Follow the activities of the Religious Right in the media. In addition to mainstream television, radio, and newspapers, follow the alternative media. Newsletters from lesbian/gay/bi, atheist, humanist, feminist, and organizations that specifically support church/state separation also are good resources.
- Avoid services, stores, or products where the Christian fish or "victory dove" symbols are displayed in the advertising. Chances are that some of the money you spend will go to fundamentalist churches and other hate groups. Be aware that In-N-Out Burgers is owned by fundamentalists and that Domino's Pizza once gave its "Humanitarian of the Year" award to Dr. James Dobson, leader of the fundamentalist hate group, "Focus on the Family."
- Join organizations that support separation of church and state or which take action on the specific issues where the fundamentalists are active. Most of these organizations are out-funded by their Religious Right opposition.
- Purchase and WEAR/DISPLAY bumper stickers, buttons, tee-shirts, etc. with slogans supporting state/church separation and taking the opposing view on issues championed by the Religious Right.
- Find out what the Religious Right is doing directly from the fundies. "Focus on the Family," the Christian Coalition, the "American Family Association," and other fundamentalist hate groups have web pages that can be found with your favorite search engine.
- Vote for, give money to, and work for candidates running against Religious Right candidates. Pay close attention to school board races where the fundies have been targeting during recent years. If you are not registered to vote, do so now.
- Write letters to counter the media campaigns of the Religious Right. The fundies are writing to advertisers, television stations and networks, producers and writers. We need to do the same.
- Write letters-to-the-editor to mainstream publications so that pro-freedom voices can be heard. Also, write letters to friendly publications to share information that their members may not have received.
- Join Gay and Lesbian Atheists and Humanists (GALAH). Our newsletter will keep you informed of the activities of the fundamentalists. There also is a section of the newsletter called "What Can I Do?" which lets you know about efforts to counter the letter writing campaigns of the Religious Right and ways you can support separation of church and state. By supporting GALAH, you will be assisting in our efforts to fight the Religious Right and to support separation of church and state.
