DESCRIPTION OF ATHEISM
ATHEISM IS...
- ... a declaration of independence from religion.
- ... freedom from superstition.
- ... the recognition that there is no credible evidence of a
higher
power nor any rational basis for the belief in a deity.
- ...something that helps to negate the influence of harmful
religious attitudes such as homophobia, sexism, racism, and
xenophobia.
- ... an excellent reason for having a happy, meaningful life
in
this world.
ATHEISM IS NOT...
- ... a religion. Atheism represents freedom from religion.
- ..."satanism," "devil worship," etc. Atheists do not believe
in
any of that nonsense.
- ... negative. Freedom and rational thought can only make
life
better not worse.
What guides your life? Are you in control of your own
destiny? Or, are you bound by traditional authority or peer
belief? If you have shed yourself of blind obedience to
what others have decided should be your shining star, you
may have more in common with atheists than you realize.
Atheists come in many varieties and shades, but have certain
qualities in common. Atheists question. Atheists are
rational. Atheists have many different points of view, some
of which are expressed in humanism, rationalism,
existentialism, or objectivism. An atheist bases her or his
lifestyle on the experience of the living, not arbitrary
authority or creeds. Life can be maximized in the here and
now, and atheists are concerned with improving the quality
of life for making themselves and others happy.
