GAY AND LESBIAN ATHEISTS AND HUMANISTS:
The Freethought Alternative
ARE YOU A FREETHINKER?
Test Yourself:
- Do you make up your own mind about things rather than blindly accepting traditions?
- Would you need tangible evidence before you would believe in a deity or deities?
- Do you think that religious beliefs fail to meet the standard of the scientific method?
- Have you questioned the beliefs of society, family, and religion, rejecting those which you decided were wrong?
- Do you reject superstitious belief systems?
- Do you think that human beings are capable of understanding the universe and its
origins?
- Do you live in the here and now instead of waiting for a heavenly reward?
- Are you an Atheist and/or a Humanist?

If you have answered "YES" to most of the above questions, you probably are a freethinker.
WHAT IS GALAH?
Gay and Lesbian Atheists and Humanists (GALAH) is a group of people whose ethics are
based on reason rather than ignorance, mythology, and fear. As gay, lesbian, transgender,
and bisexual freethinkers, we recognize that religion has been and continues to be our
greatest oppressor. GALAH supports the concept of a secular and just society.
OBJECTIVES OF GALAH
To educate the public about Atheism and Humanism.
Religion promotes fear, limits freedom, oppresses the poor, and suppresses knowledge.
Religion is authoritarian, sexist, and homophobic. Humanism values a rational and
compassionate approach to human problems and encourages people to think for
themselves.
- GALAH educates about freethought and religion through its monthly meetings (which are
open to the public), community outreach at gay and lesbian events, the Internet, and
through the media.
- GALAH has run a series of educational advertisements about atheism in the gay and
lesbian media with funds from a generous grant from the James Hervey Johnson
Charitable Educational Trust.
To support separation of church and state.
Our country was founded by freethinkers who realized that organized religion had no
place in government. The union of church and state adds legal and political power to the
oppressive "morality" of religion which would like to see lesbians, gay men, and
bisexuals, and transgenders eradicated.
- GALAH supports separation of church and state by participating in letter-writing
campaigns and in public demonstrations against religious meddling in public policy.
- GALAH understands the threat that the Religious Right poses to freethinkers, lesbians,
bisexuals, and gays. GALAH updates its members on the activities of the Religious
Right in its newsletter.
To support equal rights for lesbians, gay men, transgenders, and bisexuals.
Most religions oppress lesbians, gay men, transgenders, and bisexuals through "moral,"
social, and political controls that seek legal restrictions of personal choice, health,
welfare, and livelihood.
- GALAH opposes assaults on our community by informing members of current issues,
sending out press releases, supporting letter-writing campaigns, and by participating in
public demonstrations.
- GALAH also promotes the visibility of queer people through our involvement in the
freethought movement and by placing ads in freethought publications.
To provide an environment for freethinkers to meet each other.
GALAH meets monthly in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, DC for topical
discussions and/or socials. GALAH is looking to have events in others areas in the future
as we expand nationwide.
- GALAH has discussed topics such as "Earth Is Enough," "Being Lesbian/Gay/Bi in the
Workplace," "Relationships with Religionists," "Gay and Lesbian Theater," and "The
Farce of 'Family Values'." GALAH also has parties and other events.
- GALAH's monthly newsletter announces GALAH activities and other community
activities of interest.
- GALAH also has a voluntary phone/email roster for those who are interested in
contacting other freethinking people.
