EXXON-MOBIL BOYCOTT ENDORSED
Gay and Lesbian Atheists and Humanists (GALAH) is endorsing the boycott of ExxonMobil in response to that corporation's revocation of Mobil's non-discrimination policy and domestic partnership policies, their subsequent refusals to adopt those policies on a company-wide basis, and their homophobic pandering to the Religious Right.
Particularly disturbing is ExxonMobil spokesperson Tom Cirgiliano's claim, quoted in the June 15, 2001 Washington Blade, that having a non-discrimination policy that specifically mentions sexual orientation involves "special treatment." This is disturbingly similar to the Religious Right's "special rights" propaganda.
"Including people in non-discrimination policies is not ‘special treatment,'" GALAH Treasurer Tom Klem said. "It is unfortunate that ExxonMobil is using this kind of deceptive and bigoted rhetoric in defense of its homophobic policies."
Calls for a boycott of ExxonMobil in online forums began after the merger when the corporation revoked Mobil's queer-inclusive policies at the end of 1999. The Boycott received a major boost when the Human Rights Campaign endorsed it last month. Further support came from the Tampa Bay coalition, a local glbt group in Florida, which also designed web graphics for supporters.
Those who wish to express their support for the boycott and opposition to the company's policies are encouraged to write to:
