WHAT CAN I DO? (July 1997)

"What Can I Do" is a regular feature of the GALAH newsletter designed to activate people to fight homophobia and the Religious Right and/or support Separation of Church and State.

  1. A GOOD REASON TO LET THE BOY SCOUTS KNOW THAT YOU ARE TIRED OF THEIR DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICES:
  2. The Christian Coalition, in their May 1997 issue of Religious Rights Watch urged people to thank the Boy Scouts for their continued exclusion of gay and bisexual scout leaders. The item that prompted this call was an alleged hoax in the San Francisco Examiner in which a claim was made that the Boy Scouts were adopting a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in San Francisco involving homosexual scout leaders. This would be an excellent opportunity for people to remind the Boy Scouts that discrimination against atheists, queers, and girls is not suitable behavior for an organization which is subsidized by federal, state, and local governments.

  3. DON'T LET THE FUNDIES TELL THE REST OF US WHAT KIND OF MUSIC WE CAN LISTEN TO:
  4. Rocker Marilyn Manson has made quite a fortune for himself by combining very conventional music with album titles and stage antics calculated to shock and offend conservative Christians. The Christian Coalition, the "American Family Association," and other Christian extremists have responded to the baiting in full force, including protests, proselytizing at concerts, launching boycotts, and conducting letter-writing campaigns to MM's label, Interscope Records. It is important that the rest of us let Interscope know that the Religious Right should not have veto power over what we can and cannot listen to, especially given their rabid homophobia.
